The Farrow Dress by Grainline Studios

By Sarah

The lovely Grainline Studios’ recent dress pattern release, The Farrow, seems to be satisfying sewists left and right as we can barely keep them in stock! Close to perfection, this gem of a pattern turned out looking amazeballs in this silver on black metallic linen we currently stock (along with three other colors). The holidays are upon us and wow, what a snazzy look this would be for an X-mas or New Year’s Eve party, bring on the glitz and champagne!

I really had a blast making this dress. The silhouette is simple but the way it’s broken up into four pieces on the front along with two cleverly hidden pockets takes this dress to a higher level of wowza! It is not a hard dress to make by any means, yet I thought its construction both entertaining and intriguing.

Thanks to the wonderful Cameron for modeling for me, you are awesome!!! :)

So, as you can see, this dress has facing along the neckline and arm holes. How do y'all feel about facing? I used to think it was such a pain, not to sew but to wear! It would always work it’s way outside of the garment for all to see, egads! How embarrassing, right? Well I discovered a trick while sewing this here Farrow dress and I’m gonna tell you all about it. Tear or cut off roughly 3” strips of Stitch Witchery and place between the facing and the inside of the dress pressing with an iron to adhere. Work your way all around the neckline and the arm holes and voila, now it will stay put! We carry amazing Stitch Witchery at the shop in Regular Weight 5/8" and 1/4" and Super Weight 5/8" for heavier fabrics. It is very reasonably priced and I highly recommend it as a staple in everyone's sewing box as it can be used for multiple purposes.

Pair this dress with a shawl and some booties and your holiday look is complete! Of course the versatility of this dress can take it into any season, so if you aren't ready for such a frock at this point in time, keep it in mind for spring and summer months. Have fun everyone!
