Safety & Self-Defense Workshop with Rose City Self-Defense

  • Bolt Fabric Boutique 4928B Northeast 29th Avenue Portland, OR, 97211 United States (map)

We are happy to announce that we are hosting a safety and self-defense workshop lead by a volunteer from Rose City Self-Defense! This 2 hour workshop is largely focused on deescalation skills, with some physical skills demonstrated as well, and will cover the following:

  • Trusting and using your intuition.

  • How bias affects your judgment.

  • Establishing and setting boundaries.

  • Assertive communication.

  • De-escalation strategies.

  • Benefits and risks of various escape options.

  • An additional 30 minutes of physical strikes and escapes.

Discussion is designed to help people identify their risks and evaluate their strengths, and to explore their options for dealing with the threat of violence.

Although it is open to anyone, this workshop is intended to center the experiences of cis and trans women and LGBTQ folks.

This is a free event that we are hosting in service of the community. There will be an opportunity to donate via Venmo or cash, and all proceeds will be donated to the Trevor Project.

About Rose City Self-Defense

Rose City Self-Defense empowers girls, women, and the LGBTQ+ community, with a focus on engaging communities of color, people with disabilities, folks with unstable housing, as well as safety for sex workers.

Since 1979, we have provided free empowerment-based self-defense classes and personal safety workshops to people around the Portland metro area. We have taught self-defense skills to approximately 40,000 women and teenage girls, and personal safety workshops to over 110,000 people. Our classes offer more than just physical self-defense skills. Included are topics such as using your intuition, understanding different escape options, negotiating consent, information about abusive relationships, boundary setting, and assertiveness skills. This holistic approach has been successful in teaching our students that physical fighting is a last resort and we have many options to choose from if faced with the threat of violence.

Our classroom is up one flight of stairs and is not currently wheelchair accessible. We are working on a solution to make our space accessible to everyone. Thanks for your understanding and patience while we work this out. You may e-mail us at classes@boltfabricboutique.com if you have any questions about this process. You can see our studio here.

For 18 years and up.
